Hire senior Express.js engineers in your time zone.

A senior Express engineer owns the backend services that everything else in your product depends on: the API contracts, the data access layer, and the middleware that enforces security and consistency across every request.

In practice, that means owning:

• API design. Structuring routes, controllers, and services so the codebase stays readable as it grows past a handful of endpoints, and designing consistent request and response contracts.
• Middleware architecture. Authentication, authorization, input validation, rate limiting, and logging, built as composable middleware rather than duplicated logic scattered across route handlers.
• Data access. Efficient queries and schema design against MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or MySQL, and knowing when an ORM helps versus when raw queries are the better call.
• Performance and reliability. Handling errors gracefully, avoiding blocking operations on the event loop, and making sure one slow endpoint does not take down the whole service.
• Testing and CI. Writing tests with Jest or Mocha that actually catch regressions, and keeping the build green as the team ships.

Senior engineers also know when Express is starting to strain under a project's growth, whether that means introducing a service layer, splitting a monolith into services, or recommending a heavier framework for a specific new component, rather than forcing every problem into the same thin middleware pattern.

Express sits at the center of a large Node.js ecosystem, and a strong hire should be comfortable moving across the surrounding tools, not just the framework itself.

Look for fluency with:

• Node.js fundamentals. The event loop, async and await patterns, and streams, since Express is a thin layer over Node and performance problems are usually Node problems first.
• Adjacent frameworks. Nest.js, Fastify, and GraphQL, both to know when Express is not the right tool and to borrow patterns like dependency injection or schema-first API design where useful.
• Databases. MongoDB for document-oriented data, PostgreSQL for relational data, and Redis for caching and session storage, since almost every Express service touches at least one of these.
• Front-end pairings. React, Vue.js, or Angular, since Express is almost always the backend half of a full-stack application and the engineer needs to understand what the client actually needs from the API.
• Deployment tooling. Docker for packaging services and standard npm tooling for dependency management and scripts.

The strongest Express engineers treat the framework as a small, well-understood tool inside a much larger system, and can speak clearly about the tradeoffs at every layer around it, not just the routes they wrote.

Because Express is simple to pick up, it is also easy for a candidate to overstate their depth. A few years of gluing together routes is different from having owned a production API under real traffic and real incidents.

Ways to evaluate a candidate:

• Ask them to walk through a production Express API they built, focusing on how they structured middleware, not just what routes exist.
• Ask how they handle errors consistently across a large route set, since ad hoc error handling is one of the most common sources of production bugs in Express apps.
• Check their approach to authentication and authorization, and whether they can explain the tradeoffs between session-based auth and JWTs for a given use case.
• Probe a real performance issue they diagnosed, since Express performance problems are almost always Node.js event loop problems in disguise.
• Ask when they would reach for Nest.js or Fastify instead of Express, which reveals whether they understand Express's limits or just default to it out of habit.
