A senior Vue engineer owns how state and logic are organized across a growing application. On modern codebases that means composables, reusable functions built on the Composition API, that keep components focused on rendering rather than business logic. On older codebases it might mean working within the Options API while planning an eventual migration.

They own state management decisions too. Pinia has become the standard for anything beyond simple parent-to-child data flow, and a senior engineer knows when a piece of state belongs in a store versus staying local to a component.

If the application uses Nuxt, they are responsible for how routing, data fetching, and rendering mode, server-side, static, or client-side, are chosen per page based on what that page actually needs. Getting this wrong shows up directly in load times and SEO.

Performance and bundle size are also part of the job: lazy loading routes and components, auditing what ships to the client, and keeping Vite's build fast as the codebase grows.

Pinia has replaced Vuex as the standard state management library, and Vitest has largely replaced older testing setups for unit and component tests. A candidate current on the ecosystem will mention these by default rather than reaching for older tooling out of habit.

Vite powers the build for nearly all modern Vue projects, and understanding how it differs from older bundlers, native ES modules in development, faster hot reload, matters for engineers who will own build performance.

Ask for a walkthrough of a non-trivial component or composable they built, and listen for whether they can explain why logic was extracted into a composable rather than left inline. This is a good proxy for whether someone has actually organized a growing Vue codebase before.

Probe their state management decisions directly: when do they reach for Pinia versus local component state, and how do they avoid a store becoming a dumping ground for everything.

If the role involves Nuxt, ask about a specific page and which rendering mode they chose for it, and why. The answer should reference real tradeoffs, like SEO needs or data freshness, not just a default setting.
