In practice, the choice of cloud provider matters less over time than the quality of the engineering built on top of it. A well-architected AWS environment, with infrastructure as code, sensible cost controls, and solid security practices, will outperform a poorly run deployment on any provider. When you hire, the goal is an engineer who has operated AWS at production scale and can make sound tradeoffs between managed services and control, not just someone who has clicked through the console.
A senior AWS engineer is responsible for more than keeping servers running, they own the tradeoffs between cost, reliability, and velocity that shape how the rest of the engineering team ships and operates software. On most teams, this role sits at the intersection of infrastructure, security, and developer experience.

On teams without a dedicated platform group, a senior AWS engineer often becomes the person other engineers go to before making any infrastructure decision, from database sizing to how a new service should be deployed. Storage and databases. S3 is the default for object storage and often sits at the center of data pipelines, backups, and static asset hosting. RDS handles managed relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, and others), and DynamoDB covers use cases needing a managed NoSQL store at scale. Understanding the tradeoffs between these, and when a self-managed database might still make sense, is a mark of real experience.
Serverless. Lambda, paired with API Gateway and DynamoDB, is a common pattern for event-driven and low-traffic or highly variable workloads. Candidates should understand cold starts, execution limits, and when serverless genuinely simplifies operations versus adding unnecessary complexity for a steady-state workload.
Infrastructure as code. Terraform is the most widely used tool for defining AWS infrastructure in a reviewable, version-controlled way, with CloudFormation as the native AWS alternative. Any senior candidate should be uncomfortable making significant infrastructure changes by hand in the console.
CI/CD and delivery. Whether the pipeline runs on Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or AWS's own CodePipeline, the underlying skill is the same: building deployment automation that catches problems before they reach production.
When hiring, it helps to be specific about which of these areas your infrastructure actually leans on, since a team running a serverless-first architecture has different needs than one running a fleet of EC2 instances behind a traditional CI/CD pipeline.
AWS certifications are common and easy to obtain relative to the depth of judgment the role actually requires, so certifications alone are a weak signal. A structured evaluation should focus on real infrastructure decisions rather than service trivia.
Start with infrastructure they have actually operated. Ask candidates to walk through an environment they designed and ran in production, including how they handled scaling events, outages, or a security incident. This reveals whether someone has genuinely owned infrastructure or has only worked within guardrails someone else built.
Review their infrastructure as code practices. Ask how they structure Terraform modules, manage state, and handle changes across environments. Candidates who cannot explain their approach to state management or module reuse likely have limited hands-on IaC experience.
Check security judgment directly. Ask how they approach IAM policy design, secrets management, and network segmentation. Look for a least-privilege mindset rather than a default to broad permissions for convenience.
Probe cost awareness. Ask about a time they identified and reduced unnecessary cloud spend. Engineers who have never looked at a cost and usage report may build technically sound but expensive infrastructure.
Assess incident response experience. Ask about a real outage: what the monitoring showed, how they diagnosed it, and what changed afterward. Strong candidates treat postmortems as a chance to close gaps, not just restore service.
