A senior Ionic engineer owns more than component styling. They are responsible for the architecture decisions that keep a shared codebase maintainable across three platforms at once.

Framework and component architecture. They structure the Angular, React, or Vue layer so that platform differences stay isolated rather than scattered through the codebase, and they know when to reach for a native Ionic component versus a custom one.

A senior engineer manages plugin versions, writes custom native plugins when needed, and handles the platform-specific quirks that show up on real devices but not in a browser.

Ionic looks approachable from the outside, since it is built on familiar web technologies, which makes it easy for a candidate to overstate their depth. A focused interview separates real experience from surface familiarity quickly.

Ask for App Store and Play Store links to apps they built, and ask specifically what native features the app used, such as camera access, push notifications, or offline sync. Vague answers here are a signal.

Have them describe a real bug that only showed up on a physical device and not in a browser or simulator. Strong candidates have specific stories about platform quirks, plugin version conflicts, or performance issues on older Android hardware.

Probe their depth in the underlying framework directly, since a candidate who only knows Ionic's components but is weak in Angular, React, or Vue will struggle on anything beyond basic screens.

Ask how they decided, on a past project, that a feature needed a custom Capacitor plugin rather than an existing one. This reveals whether they understand the native bridge or have only worked within its defaults.
